What is Christian Science?

Christian Science, discovered by Mary Baker Eddy, is a universal, practical system of spiritual, prayer-based Christian healing, available and accessible to everyone. Christian Science is fully explained in Mary Baker Eddy’s primary text on spirituality and healing, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Christian Science has helped many people find better emotional and physical health, answers to life’s deepest issues and progress on their spiritual journeys. Many Christian Scientists are members of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, but membership in The Church is not a prerequisite for the practice of Christian Science. Healthcare decisions are always a matter of individual choice.

Who is Mary Baker Eddy?

Mary Baker Eddy is the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and the author of the foundational work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Throughout her youth and early adulthood, Mary Baker Eddy faced poor health and financial and emotional hardship. She overcame these challenges to become one of the most prominent individuals of her day. Toward the end of her life, Human Life magazine described her as “the most famous, interesting and powerful woman in America, if not in the world, today.” She continues to be regarded as one of history’s more remarkable figures. Today, her primary work, Science and Health, engages readers around the world.

The Tenets of Christian Science

These tenets - or key points - briefly summarize the teachings of Christian Science. They are rooted in the Bible.

  • As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.
  • We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God's image and likeness.
  • We acknowledge God's forgiveness of sin in the destruction of sin and the spiritual understanding that casts out evil as unreal. But the belief in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts.
  • We acknowledge Jesus' atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man's unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way-shower; and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death.
  • We acknowledge that the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection served to uplift faith to understand eternal Life, even the allness of Soul, Spirit, and the nothingness of matter.
  • And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Christian Science the same as Scientology?

No. Other than a similarity in name, the two have nothing in common. (Please see About Christian Science for further information on the healing system discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866.)
Is it true that Christian Scientists don’t take medicine?

Generally, a Christian Scientist’s first choice is to rely on prayer for healing, and in most cases, this means that a medical remedy is unnecessary. There is no biblical or church mandate to forgo medical intervention, nor do Christian Scientists believe that it’s God’s will that anyone suffer or die. A Christian Scientist’s decision to rely on prayer comes from trust, not blind faith, in God, and from a conviction that God’s care continues under every circumstance.
Why is it called Christian Science?

It’s Science because it’s based upon a set of spiritual principles - laws relating to the nature of God and His creation - that can be applied with expected, consistent results.
Why do you call yourselves Christian?

Because Christian Science is based on the Bible, and Christian Scientists follow the teachings and ministry of Christ Jesus. In fact, the virgin birth, the crucifixion, the resurrection and ascension of Christ Jesus, and so on, are all central to Christian Science theology.
